Book review: Anxious People

If you’re a Fredrik Backman fan and you haven’t gotten your hands on Anxious People yet… what are you doing? Every new Backman book is better than the last in my opinion (and yes, I’m saying Anxious People may even have been better than Beartown!). I fell in love with this story in the first few pages.

Backman’s usual quirky humor (and I don’t use that word lightly with books) shone through in every character, but not without the classic undertones of sadness, almost melancholy, that his stories always entail. The characters in this one were charming from the beginning- even the bank robber. Their relationships alone were lovable yet frustrating, but once they began to intertwine everyone’s best self became evident.

One thing I really like about Backman’s books is that the storylines typically take place over a short period of time. This one was no exception, and it actually happened over the course of one day! I think this style of writing is super fun and unique, although sadly it makes the story feel so short! I was caught wishing the hostage situation could have lasted just a little longer.

What is your favorite Fredrik Backman novel?

xx, Lauren
