If you are looking for the perfect, lighthearted summer read, look no further!! Counting Chickens: A Martha’s Vineyard Novel by T. Elizabeth Bell is just the quintessential New England love story you need. This book will take you right back onto the island if you have visited before, and open you up to a whole new world if you haven’t. An MV resident herself, Bell knows the ins and outs of the island and its most charming qualities by heart. As someone who is missing the Vineyard a lot more than usual (this may be the first summer I don’t get a chance to visit), this book felt like a hug from my happy place.
Not to mention, the pages are filled to the brim with steamy summer romance. From a crazy fling to a sweet, slow-burn love story, the main character Remy has it all this summer. Or does she? As she tries to keep up with her pesky clients, keep a creative outlet for her art, and somehow be the shoulder to lean on for several friends new and old, her summer is anything but relaxed.
Some highlights of the book are Remy’s wholesome friendships, new pup Coop, relationship wit her quirky chicken Ada, and a glimpse into local life on the Vineyard. I loved reading about favorite places and new ones to try, as well as the local agricultural and art industries that give the island soul.
This book pairs best with a hot lobster roll and a boat ride (but if you’re like me and the boat ride is harder to come by, a towel and some sand works just fine!). Yet another gem from Bell!!
What is your favorite beach read?
