Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir was the first science fiction book I have read in a long, long while (maybe ever?!). And I liked it! When my book club chose Project Hail Mary as our February pick, I was a bit wary. I typically stick to contemporary fiction and romance genres… and based on the cover alone, this was neither. However, I was very pleasantly surprised! I did not expect this book to be so funny, but it was. Ryland Grace was a goofy narrator and I loved his little teacher insights and cheesy humor. I think that is what kept me sucked into the story.
In this book, there is a mysterious species eating away at the SUN. Earth has to act quickly, or the globe will begin cooling at an alarming rate. Obviously, a middle school science teacher is fit for the job… right? Ryland faces some challenges he had never dreamed of in this book, and makes a friend you and I couldn’t even imagine.
I rated this book 3.5/5 stars because although I liked it and found it entertaining, there were some parts (specifically the science-dense chapters) that droned on a little too long for me personally. The silly, heartfelt parts kept me captivated, though! One thing that did quite bother me about this story was the ending (bummer, I know). I felt that it was too far fetched, even for this already wild story. If you have read this one, I would love to hear your thoughts.
