A few weekends ago I picked up a copy of Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. I’d had my eye on it for a while, and for good reason! From start to finish it lasted me only about a day and a half- I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Ward’s words. The way in which she intertwined such a beautiful story with deeply emotional topics moved me, to say the least.
Sing, Unburied, Sing is eerily relevant to the issues we are currently discussing on a national level. Systemic racism, mass incarceration, and drugs are a few of those topics. Ward’s story not only showed how all three of those things can tear a family part, but also how they can bring it together.
My favorite part of the story was watching Jojo navigate and grow within his familial relationships. I especially loved seeing his relationship with Pop evolve, even though the story takes place over a short period of time. The alternating perspectives in which Ward told Jojo and Leonie’s sides of the story added so much depth and provoked so many emotions for me as a reader. And Richie’s chapters took me by storm! I didn’t want this book to end. I’m so glad I was able to find a copy at the Brewster Bookstore- I am looking forward to reading Ward’s other novel, Salvage the Bones, sometime soon.
If you’ve read this one, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
xx, Lauren
