Book review: The Dead Romantics

Romance AND ghosts? Sign me up. If you’re looking for the same, I recommend The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston!

The Dead Romantics was a sweet romance on the surface, but at its core was a story of love and loss that resonated with me more than I expected it to. The story follows Florence Day, a romance ghost writer trying to feel at home in New York City when her real home is so far away. Growing up as the daughter of a funeral home owner was hard enough without the tiny fact that Florence could see and, um, talk to ghosts. This knack for communication with the post-living was one she shared with her father only. When he passes away unexpectedly, she realizes is on her own in that sense, but surrounded by love in many other senses she’d been ignoring (I was trying to squeeze in a joke about the sixth sense in there somewhere but it wasn’t working).

When Florence realizes she might have a crush on her very handsome editor after a late-night alleyway smooch, he has to go on and die. Typical. Despite his departure from Earth, Benji helps Florence come to terms with her life and her father’s death in a way that surprises them both (well, she’s surprised a ghost could help her, and he’s surprised he’s a ghost).

Despite it’s categorically cheesy tropes, I was pleasantly surprised by this spooky romance. It was uplifting and sweet with the perfect balance of funeral home humor and crows. If you have passed it by, I recommend giving it a shot!

Rating: 5/5 midnight cemetery walks
