I recently finished reading The Flight Portfolio by Julie Orringer, and I genuinely didn’t want it to end! Historical fiction is my favorite genre, and this book fit the bill perfectly. The scene was set in occupied France during World War II, where a man named Varian Fry was working on a mission to rescue refugees and bring them safely to America.
These weren’t just any refugees, however, but bright and talented artists, authors, scientists, and other gifted individuals who were scattered across Europe during the War.
This book was such a delightful read, with the added thrill of the truth behind it. Yes, Varian Fry was a real guy, and although Orringer embellished some aspects of the story (such as his romance with an old college friend), much of it was based in truth.
It isn’t often that I can fly through a 500+ page book, but I read this one in about a week. I couldn’t wait until I had time to pick it up again, which in my opinion is one of the best possible qualities for a book to have.
With just the right amount of suspense, history, humor, internal turmoil, and romance, this book was a ten out of ten for me. Definitely pick it up!
Do you have any favorite historical fiction novels that I should read next?
xx, Lauren
