I’m going to say it. The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett is the book of the summer, and maybe even the year. I could rave about this book for hours!!
I quite literally could not put this book down, it took me a span of about 20 hours to finish! I got so sucked into it that I would completely lose track of time in it. If you’re a book lover you know that isn’t the most common occurrence, so I cherished it!
The Vanishing Half is an astonishing story of twin sisters, once as close as two sisters could be, that part ways and don’t see each other ever again. The book has several storylines that naturally get tangled and messy, as any good family drama does.
The Vanishing Half reaches beyond the realm of a typical family drama/mystery, though. It quite literally crosses racial barriers, and goes deeply into discussion of race and skin color and the way it can affect and define someone’s identity by society’s standards.
Full of suspense, emotion, drama, and social commentary, I could not recommend this book more. If you have the chance, absolutely read this one! You won’t want to miss out on Bennet’s marvelous story-telling.
xx, Lauren
