This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens was a lovely lighthearted book to start off the new year. I kicked off 2022 in quarantine, and this fast-paced love story definitely helped lift my spirits a little bit. Although at times the main character, Minnie, bugged me, overall it was a cute story and I liked the premise a lot.
Minnie Cooper (yup, you read that right) was the second British baby born in the nineties, just seconds behind Quinn Hamilton. Minnie and Quinn’s moms actually shared a delivery room, and became friends up until Mrs. Hamilton stole Mrs. Cooper’s first-choice baby name. There couldn’t be TWO Quinns born on January 1st! Now that would just look pathetic. And so for her entire life, Minnie’s mom has filled Minnie’s imagination with pictures of an evil Quinn Hamilton and his evil mom, too. Minnie is cursed with bad luck every New Year’s Eve that runs into her birthday and ruins it, year after year. That is, until the New Year’s Eve that she meets Quinn himself. Suddenly her luck seems to stop running out.
Though cheesy and predictable, this story was still sweet. Especially this year, stuck in quarantine on New Year’s Eve, this little book gave me something to smile about. Here’s to 2022!
