Book review: We Were Liars

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart was a fast-paced, suspenseful, psychological thriller that did NOT end the way I expected it to. The story follows Cady Sinclair’s inner monologue as she spends her first summer back on her grandparents’ private island off of Martha’s Vineyard after not being there for two summers. She reminisces with her three best friends/cousins, otherwise known as The Liars, about summers past. Something is different this summer, though. The Liars are acting weird, and Cady can’t help but feel like a bit of an outlier in their group, despite being inseparable for years and years beforehand.

Two summers before, something happened on the island. Cady just can’t remember what. Everyone else seems to recall, though, and no one will tell her no matter how many times she asks. Over the course of the summer, the unsettling feeling Cady has in the pit of her stomach worsens until finally she remembers why everything is different now.

And the reason will absolutely SHOCK you. This was a Verity- level plot twist in my eyes. I am afraid to give it away if I say too much, but please give We Were Liars a read if you get a chance! I listened on audio and the time went by wicked fast- I was totally sucked in.

Rating: 4/5 stars
